Nearly half of respondents said there's a palpable difference in the office before and after Labour Day. I can relate. In radio, we head into a very important ratings period and although we "bring it" every day of the year, there is certainly more scrutiny and more pressure on us during ratings. It's part of the stress but it's also a big part of the fun.
Summer holidays are over but I won't feel any difference about summer hours. In my 20+ years of broadcasting I have never been affected by summer hours. Those are for office people, just like afternoon meetings and other staff outings. They're a kick if you'd otherwise be locked in your cubicle grinding out sausages but when it's your nap time...not so much. Please, don't mistake this for whining because I'm not, but I think all morning hosts can relate to this: it would be incredible if just once, an appreciative boss called us on a summer Thursday and said, hey, you never get extra time off because of summer hours so guess what - we're covering your show tomorrow. Have a long weekend! WHEEEEE!
In the words of the great philosopher Wayne Campbell, "And monkeys might fly out of my butt."
The Tuesday after Labour Day does have a texture to it. The kids are back in school, retailers grudgingly refrain from putting up Christmas decorations for just a few more weeks and the wind whips up just a bit too strongly for outdoor swimming to be much fun. But I do love the fall and crunching through crispy leaves with my favourite four-legged friends, so bring it on.
